Grease Traps are boxed devices connected your sink waste lines. They stop the fats, oil and grease (FOG) from entering the main sewer systems. They can range in sizes depending on the locations needs. This goes hand and hand with the frequency of cleaning them. Most of your local sanitary distracts require them to be cleaned out monthly , semi monthly or quarterly. When the grease trap is cleaned properly, it is first pumped out and all walls scrapped clean. There will be food particles at the bottom that also needs to be removed. When FOG and food is not removed on a routine basis, corrosion, rust and rotted out trap floors will happen.

Remember to maintain proper documentation of the grease disposal. Any one whom cleans/pumps your grease trap is legally required to provide you a manifest receipt. This record provides proof that the waste was disposed of at an approved treating facility. If these records are not available and the grease has not been disposed of correctly, this can lead to hefty fines from the sanitary districts.

***Do not use enzymes (grease removers) in your grease trap. This only temporarily breaks down grease as it makes its way to the sewer lines. This can lead to rotting out the connected line and many other issues, like a back up when you least need it.
